About us

Belts Earned, Not Given

At Ascension Martial Arts our goal is simple: to encourage and assist students to set their own martial arts goals and to continue to move upward toward a higher level of training.

Our Mission

Everyone has their own reason for entering the martial arts, their own benchmark, and their own goals. There is not one standard of practice at Ascension Martial Arts; practice focuses on the individual and what they need to better themselves, while working in a team setting where the students become family. We push each other to be better, support each other to become stronger. You work at your own pace to achieve your highest level of accomplishment not only physically, but mentally and spiritually, as well. A black belt at Ascension is not given, it is earned.

FAQ

Most frequent questions and answers

The martial arts are based on discipline and respect, for yourself and others. If you want to grow and progress in the art both physically and mentally, you need to practice. “Winners are not people who never fail, but people who never quit”. Because repetition is the key to success in martial arts, it is imperative to come to class regularly, work on techniques and create and improve self-discipline. You are responsible to yourself, yes, but you also become part of a motivational family whom you are responsible to, as well. Building self-discipline by coming to class, eating healthier, will increase your self-respect and confidence. You will be amazed at what your body can do, how fast and hard you can kick and punch and how quickly you can progress once you decide to do so.

Bullying is a big problem in today’s world. Kids and adults alike can experience some type of bullying. Those who are quiet, soft-spoken and have less confidence are the ones who are picked on. The martial arts stand on a strong foundation of the mind-body connection. Students strive to advance in the graceful and powerful physical movements of the art, while the mind continues to build confidence. We teach students how to be aware of themselves, their surroundings and the situations they are in.

The strong do not continually engage in physical confrontation; the strong find the will and way to walk away without confrontation when possible. We will explain how to walk with confidence, how to avoid confrontational situations, and how to best defend yourself if a confrontational situation turns physical.

Children are individuals with different personalities and different levels of development. We have various programs for children, beginners typically starting at 4 years of age. We recommend our Trial Program, in which we can get a sense of your child’s physical capability and the ability to follow instruction and direction. The Trial will also give you a chance to see what the program entails and whether this is the right program for you and your family. All children must be toilet trained.

Our expectation of proper conduct is firm, in and outside of our school. We train our students to use the martial arts to avoid physical confrontation and to defend themselves physically if necessary, but not to be a bully. Using our skills not in self-defense, to hurt others, can get you expelled from our program.

Absolutely! We recommend you take your time and go at your own pace. We will work with each student individually to determine goals of physical and cardio fitness, stress relief, coordination, flexibility, strengthening and toning. Martial arts are an artistic discipline, a physical workout, a way of life. We will help you find the balance.

No, in fact many people who do not excel at other sports truly blossom in martial arts. You will build strength, agility, coordination, flexibility and accuracy as you learn the techniques.

Safety is always our first priority, but there is always the possibility of injury in sports. We will take every precaution by teaching the proper ways to stretch, proper technique and how to recognize your body’s signals to slow down. If you have any pre-existing health conditions, please make us aware so that we may tailor a workout specifically for you. If a doctor’s note is needed, please provide us with one.
